Now I fell for it.
A video showed up in my feed featuring two of my childhood heroes - Bruce Lee and Muhammad Ali.
I grew up studying them. Reading whatever I could find. Watching how they trained, how they spoke, how they thought. I even hhad the posters.
Repetition. Persistence. Discipline. Both carried a stoic approach to life - one I still recognize myself in.
So when an Instagram reel appeared with the two of them seemingly talking about exactly that, I shared it without hesitation.
It was fake.
A reconstruction. Their words rearranged to make it seem like they had met. They never did. The video was entirely AI-generated - no different from the horse saving a child or the elephant rescuing a drowning leopard.
It. Never. Happened.
“Harmless,” some might say. I don’t buy that.
Because when you start blurring the line between what’s real and what isn’t, you don’t just confuse facts - you mess with trust. Not only trust in media, but trust in your own judgment. Over time, that doubt starts creeping in as a default setting. You fatigue in trying to filter.
And that has consequences.
What stayed with me wasn’t the video. It was the feeling afterward. Self-doubt. A bit of embarrassment for sharing something that, in hindsight, was obviously constructed. That feeling isn’t artificial. It is real. And that means the impact is real too.
Multiply that by millions of people, every day.
This isn’t about one fake clip. It’s about what happens when believable fabrications become normal. People don’t suddenly become more critical. Most get tired. They disengage. They stop caring enough to check, and instead lean on whatever feels familiar, loud, or authoritative. See where I’m going with this?
That’s not a healthy place for any society to drift toward.
I don’t hate technology. I hate erosion. Of trust. Of attention. Of lived experience. And I hate surrender to fascist authorities.
So I choose, as much as possible, to opt out.
And I did with Heartclub. Real people. Real conversations. 1 million beers. Art. Friction. Mistakes. Memories that come from actually being there.
I’d recommend you do the same.
